The PMA2020 abortion survey module produced updated and expanded estimates of several abortion-related indicators. The results from the surveys provide new insights into the characteristics of women who have an abortion and the pathways leading to abortion within or outside the health care system. Four-page briefs highlighting abortion survey results are now available.
Key findings include:
+ An estimated 4 to 6% of women of reproductive age had a likely abortion in the 12 months prior to the study, indicating that 1.8 to 2.7 million abortions occur annually in Nigeria.
+ Nearly 4 out of 10 abortions in Rajasthan, India were considered dangerous, and 25% of women experienced complications for which they sought postabortion care at a health facility.
+ In 2017, the annual incidence of likely abortions in Cote d’Ivoire was 36.9 per 1,000 women age 15 to 49 when asking women directly – more than 209,000 abortions. However, when using information related to the experience of respondents’ closest confidantes, the number of abortions rose to more than 288,000, equivalent to a rate of 50.8 per 1,000 women of reproductive age.
